WHAT IS HDR ?? LEARN WHAT MAKES AN ORDINARY PICTURE EXCEPTIONAL....

We all are familiar with term 'HDR' and we come through HDR a thousand times in our day to day life, but most of us don't pay attention to it and neglect it (reason being LAZINESS😜) but through this article i am going to tell you what HDR means in the easiest way possible so that everyone remembers it easily.

UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS

Well HDR stands for "HIGHER DYNAMIC RANGE", but let me start with dynamic range firstly.
Dynamic range means difference between the highest and lowest values of a quantity but we are dealing with the light systems OR optical systems so we can also define dynamic range as  difference between the highest and lowest value of intensity of light a system can detect.
We should thank god for two beautiful eyes he has given us to see with such a great dynamic range, our human eyes can even beat the best of DSLR'S in the market right now (and it costs us nothing 😜) but there exists a exception through our eyes we can only focus on a particular point perfectly in the scene &but a DSLR is designed to click a photograph better at all scenarios in a scene.
Now let's begin with HDR.
  1. HDR helps us to provide great picture quality.
  2. HDR helps to preserves details in darkest & brightest areas of a picture.
  3. HDR also helps to provide more natural, cinematic & true to life colors in a picture.

HOW HDR WORKS???

In phone's camera

Here image sensor create or captures different high quality pictures at a particular instant at different brightness and contrast levels, after that all pictures combine to form a single photo which is the best combination of all details & which gives the best results. Our mobile cameras are smart enough to do it automatically but to understand it more effectively we can take different images at different brightness and contrast levels and then superimpose them using a image editor, after that we can see the before & after results.

WHAT ARE HDR DISPLAYS?

The best way to understand anything better is by comparing it with something else, here in comparison of HDR screens with standard screens will help you to understand easily.
HDR displays: HDR displays consists of features like:

  1. High or wider dynamic range
  2. Better brightness and contrast levels
  3. Wider color spectrum.
In comparison to standard displays HDR displays provide us wider dynamic range which makes our viewing experience far better, these displays also provide us better brightness levels thus producing better lit areas in a scene without any over-exposure or any other issue.
Our human eyes can see many amount of colors so our viewing experience can become better only if our eyes can recognize these colors in majority but due to many complications we can transmit or view limited amount of colors on a display thus making our viewing experience dull but here HDR comes into play thus unlocking doors of more colors and making our viewing experience more cinematic and true to nature.

HOW TO ENJOY THIS WONDERFUL TECH ?

A average human being can enjoy this tech on HDR supported displays provided by companies like Samsung, Sony, LG etc..
But is this enough??? the answer is no to stream HDR content on your TV even if it supports it we need a source that can provide us that seamless experience. Companies like Netflix, Amazon are providing HDR content but to get this experience using DTH'S it may take many long years, till then we can enjoy the online streaming services.

COMPARISON BETWEEN HDR 10 VS HDR 10+ VS DOLBY VISION

HDR 10 is one of the most popular and used format of HDR . it sends static metadata to the video stream which consists of encoded info to change the color calibration settings to make picture more comfortable and natural, it supports brightness levels up to 1000 nits.
HDR 10+ is one of the current hot topics after the SAMSUNG' S10 announcement of supporting HDR 10+, making it the world's first ad only smartphone till now to achieve this feat. In this case instead of static dynamic metadata is sent to change color calibration frame by frame. It supports brightness levels up to 4000 nits.
DOLBY VISION is Dolby's own made format of HDR. It also send dynamic metadata similar to HDR 10+ but it can provide brightness levels up to 10,000 nits.
